For a homomorphism \(f\colon A\to B\) of commutative \(S\)-algebras and an \(A\)-module spectrum \(M\), the author defines a cosimplicial \(A\)-module spectrum \({\mathcal T}^\cdot_A(M;B)\) from the functor \(B\wedge _A-\), and then the derived completion \(M_B^\wedge \) of \(M\) along \(f\) as the total spectrum of \({\mathcal T}^\cdot_A(M;B)\). Then he shows its elementary properties such as functoriality in several ways, compares it with other completions, and shows that the completion depends only on \(\pi_0(B)\) for \((-1)\)-connected \(S\)-algebras. A spectral sequence converging to \(\pi_*(M_B^\wedge)\) is also set up, whose \(E_2\)-term depends on the structure of \(\pi_*M\). This is considered for applications in algebraic \(K\)-theory.
