From the authors' abstract: We study the spectral properties of the sequence of matrices arising from the discretization, using central finite differences (FD) of minimal order, of an elliptic (or semi-elliptic) self-adjoined differential equation under Dirichlet boundary value conditions on the interval \([0,1]\). The differential operator includes a nonnegative, bounded coefficient function, which may have some isolated zeros in the initial interval. We state and prove the explicit form of the inverse of this type of matrices and formulas concerning the relations between the orders of zeros of the coefficient function and the asymptotic behaviour of the minimal eigenvalue (condition number) of the related matrices. These results are extended to the higher order (semi-elliptic) differential problems. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the obtained theoretical findings for 1D and 2D cases.
