The authors study relations between the variable exponent Lebesgue spaces \(L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\), \(1\leq p(x)<\infty\), of functions \(u\) on an open bounded set \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb R^n\) and the corresponding Lebesgue spaces of their (relative) rearrangements with variable exponent which is the rearrangement of \(p(x)\). Let \(u_\ast\) (\(u^\ast\), respectively) denote the decreasing (increasing, respectively) rearrangement of a measurable function \(u: \Omega \to \mathbb R^1\) and let \(\|u\|_{p(\cdot)}\) be the Amemiya norm in \(L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\). The following statements are proved, among others. Theorem 3. \(\frac{1}{1+|\Omega|}\|u_\ast\|_{p^\ast(\cdot)}\leq \|u\|_{p(\cdot)} \leq (1+|\Omega|)\|u_\ast\|_{p_\ast(\cdot)}.\) Theorem 4. \(\|(v_{\ast u})_\ast\|_{p^\ast(\cdot)}\leq c\|v_\ast\|_{p^\ast(\cdot)} \leq c\|v\|_{p(\cdot)}\), for all nonnegative \(u,v\in L^1(\Omega)\), where \(v_{\ast u}=\lim_{\lambda\searrow 0}\frac{u+\lambda v_\ast-u_\ast}{\lambda}\) is the relative rearrangement of \(v\) with respect to \(u\). Theorem 6. Let \(p\) be bounded. Then the map \(u \in L^{p(\cdot)}(\Omega)\to |u|_\ast\in L^{p^\ast(\cdot)}(\Omega^\ast)\) is continuous. A similar statement about the continuity of the corresponding map for relative rearrangements, as well as some other useful properties, are proved. Applications to Sobolev embeddings are also given.
