An irreducible linear algebraic monoid \(M\) is referred to as semisimple if it has zero and its unit group is reductive with \(1\)-dimensional center. A semisimple algebraic monoid \(M\) is called quasismooth if \(M\setminus\{0\}\) has sufficiently mild singularities. The author defines a cellular decomposition of such monoids using the method of one-parameter subgroups. These cells turn out to be ``almost'' affine spaces. But they can also be described in terms of the idempotents and \(B\times B\)-orbits of \(M\), where \(B\) is a Borel subgroup of the unit group of \(M\). This leads to a number of combinatorial results about the inverse monoids of \(B\times B\)-orbits (i.e., the Renner monoid) of \(M\). In particular, the author obtains some fundamental information about the \(H\)-polynomial of \(M\).
