    The equation \[ -y''+f(y)y=\lambda y\quad\text{on}\quad I:=(0,1)\tag{1} \] is considered subject to the boundary and positivity conditions \[ y(0)=0=y(1),\quad y(t)>0 \quad\text{for}\quad t\in I, \tag{2} \] where \(\lambda>0\). The following conditions are placed on \(f\): \(f\in C^1([0,\infty)), f(0)=0=f'(0)\); \(g(y):=f(y)/y\) for \(y\geq 0\), where \(g(0):=0\), is strictly increasing and \(g(y)\to \infty\) as \(y\to \infty\); \(F(y)/(y f(y))\to 0\) as \(y\to 0\), where \(F(y):=\int_0^y f(s)\,ds\); \(y^{5/2}(f'(y)+f(y))<<F(y)\sqrt{f(y)}\) for \(y>>1\); \(F(sy)/F(y)\to 0\) as \(y\to \infty\) for a fixed \(0\leq s<1\); \(f'(y)\) is strictly increasing for \(y\geq 0\); and there exists a constant \(c>0\) such that for \(y_1>y_0>>1\), \(f'(y_1)-f'(y_0)\leq c(y_1-y_0)f'(y_1)\). Under these conditions, for each \(\alpha>0\) there exists a unique solution \((\lambda,y)=(\lambda(\alpha),y_\alpha)\) of (1)-(2) with \(\| y_\alpha\| _2=\alpha\) and \(\{ (\lambda(\alpha),y_\alpha) | \alpha>0\}\) gives all solutions of (1)-(2). Here \((\lambda(\alpha),y_\alpha)\) is an unbounded \(C^1\) curve in \({R}^+\times L^2(I)\) emanating from \((\pi^2,0)\). It is proved that as \(\alpha\to\infty\), \[ \lambda(\alpha)=\frac{f(\alpha)}{\alpha}+\frac{\pi}{4}\left(f'(\alpha) \left[1+2\frac{F(\alpha)}{\alpha f(\alpha)}(1+o(1))\right]-\frac{f(\alpha)}{\alpha}(1+o(1))\right) \sqrt{\frac{\alpha}{f(\alpha)}}. \]
