Consider the Neumann problem for the one-dimensional Perona-Malik equation \(u_t=(\sigma(u_x))_x\), where \(\sigma(s)=s/(1+s^2)\). The authors rephrase this problem into the one related to the quasiconvex hull of a graph in the space of \(2\times2\) matrices. Then they replace the function \(\sigma\) by an increasing function \(\sigma^*\) and use the solutions of the modified problem as the centre of the mass for the Young measure solutions to construct the approximate solutions of the original problem. The sequences of the approximate solutions generate Young measure solutions. The results also show that the solutions of the one-dimensional Perona-Malik equation are unstable under small \(W^{-1,\infty}\) perturbations.
