The author constructs zonal function networks in order to approximate functions in Sobolev classes on the unit sphere which is embedded in an Euclidean space to obtain an optimal order of decay for the degree of approximation. The network is given explicitly as the value of a linear operator acting on the function to be approximated. The uniform approximation is studied as well. The theory is also used for obtaining an error bounds on a very general class of quadrature formulas which are exact for high degree polynomials with respect to a weighted integral.
