The authors present a new approach to Morse and Novikov theories, based on the deRham--Federer theory of currents. They employ techniques developed by \textit{F. R. Harvey} and \textit{H. B. Lawson} [Ann. Math. (2) 153, No. 1, 1--25 (2001; Zbl 1001.58005)]. In the Morse case the authors construct a noncompact analogue of the Morse complex, relating a Morse function to the cohomology with compact forward support of the manifold. This complex is then used in Novikov theory to obtain a geometric realization of the Novikov complex as a complex of currents.
