For a given integer \(n\geq 3\) the author proves the existence of an explicite number \(\varepsilon (n) >0\) such that a non-constant \(K\)-quasiregular mapping \(f: G \to \mathbb{R}^n,\) where \(G\) is a domain in \(\mathbb{R}^n,\) is locally homeomorphic if \(K\leq 1+ \varepsilon (n)\). This result solves an important open problem. By the work of \textit{O. Martio, S. Rickman} and \textit{J. Väisälä} [Topological and metric properties of quasiregular mappings. Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Ser. A I 488, 31 p. (1971; Zbl 0223.30018)] and \textit{V. M. Gol'dshtejn} [Sib. Mat. Zh. 12, 1250--1258 (1971; Zbl 0231.30031)] only the existence of such a number was known. This new result is likely to provide new insight into e.g. the stability theory of quasiregular mappings in the sense of \textit{Yu. G. Reshetnyak} [Stability theorems in geometry and analysis. Transl. from the Russian by N. S. Dairbekov and V. N. Dyatlov. rev. and updated transl. rev. and updated transl. Mathematics and its Applications (Dordrecht). 304. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers. (1994; Zbl 0925.53005)]. The author's ingenious method makes use of moduli of surface families and a quantitative isoperimetric inequality due to \textit{R. R. Hall} [ J. Reine Angew. Math. 428, 161--175 (1992; Zbl 0746.52012)].
