The authors investigate separated signed binary expansions, i.e.\ any integer~\(n\) can be written as \(n=\sum_{j=0}^{\infty}a_{j}2^{j}\) with \(a_{j}\in\{-1,0,1\}\), \(a_{j}\neq 0\) for only finitely many~\(j\), and \(a_{j}a_{j+1}\) for all~\(j\). It is described how the separated signed binary expansion can be calculated. Two dynamical systems are associated to this expansion, an odometer and a Markov chain with three states, and certain cocycles are constructed. Then results on ergodic properties of these systems are proved.
