A classical theorem due to Sylvester relates the determinant of a matrix \(A\) to the determinant of a matrix having as entries certain minors of \(A\). Analogs of this result exist for matrices with entries in noncommutative rings, such as the quantized algebra of functions on \(\text{GL}_N\) and the Yangian \(Y(\text{gl}_N)\) for \(\text{gl}_N\). In the present paper an analogue of Sylvester's theorem is presented for certain subalgebras of \(Y(\text{gl}_N)\), the twisted Yangians \(Y(g_N)\) associated with the orthogonal or symplectic Lie algebras \(g_N=o_N, \text{sp}_N\). Following the strategy in [\textit{D. Krob} and \textit{B. Leclerc}, Commun. Math. Phys. 169, No. 1, 1--23 (1995; Zbl 0829.15024)] this is achieved by providing first an analog for extended Yangians \(X(g_N)\) and then passing to their quotients \(Y(g_N)\). The theorem is given in terms of an algebra morphism \(Y(g_{N-M})\to Y(g_N)\) for \(M\leq N\) with \(N-M\) even, and it makes use of the Sklyanin minors of a matrix of generators of \(Y(g_N)\). Applications to representation theory of twisted Yangians are given. Let \(\Hom_{g_M}(W,V)\) be the space of \(g_M\)-linear morphisms between finite-dimensional irreducible representations of \(g_M\) and \(g_N\supset g_M\), respectively. The constructed morphism together with the evaluation morphism \(Y(g_N)\to U(g_N)\) endows \(\Hom_{g_M}(W,V)\) with a \(Y(g_{N-M})\)-module structure. If \(g_N= \text{sp}_N\) this is a simple module. Finite-dimensional irreducible representations of Yangians are parametrized by Drinfeld polynomials, containing the information corresponding to weights. Drinfeld polynomials of the \(Y(\text{sp}_{N-M})\)-module \(\Hom_{\text{sp}_M}(W,V)\) are explicitly computed through a combinatorial rule involving the partitions corresponding to \(V\) and \(W\). A second application of the quantum Sylvester's theorem for \(Y(g_N)\) is the following. Let us consider the Olshansky's algebra \(A_M\), which is constructed as a projective limit of certain centralizer subalgebras \(A_M(N)_N\) with \(A_M(N)\subset U(g_N)\). One may apply Sylvester's theorem in order to construct an injective algebra morphism \(Y(g_M)\to A_M\) so that \(A_M\cong C_M\otimes Y(g_N)\). Here, \(C_M\) is an explicitly described subalgebra, the so-called algebra of virtual Laplace operators studied in detail in [\textit{A. Molev} and \textit{G. Olshansky}, Sel. Math., New Ser. 6, No. 3, 269--317 (2000; Zbl 1026.17021)]. In this way \(Y(g_M)\) is realized as a projective limit of centralizer subalgebras in universal enveloping algebras.
