\textit{P. Volino} et al. [in M. Daehlen et al. (Eds.), Eurographics '94, 13, C-155-C-164 (1994)] had conjectured sufficient conditions for non-selfintersection of surfaces. Here the authors establish precise conditions under which the conjecture is true and indicate potential pitfalls in using the conjecture without verifying the hypotheses of the theorem proved here. Examples are given to show that the hypotheses of the theorem cannot be eliminated.
