The author proposes a notion of ``general approximation property''. Many types of shadowing, in particular, the classical version of shadowing, the \(L_p\)-shadowing, the limit shadowing, the average and asymptotic average shadowing, are general approximation properties. The author proves that there exists a metric space \(X\) such that sets of maps with a large family of shadowing properties are not dense in the space \(C(X)\) of continuous self-maps of \(X\), nor in the space \(S(X)\) of continuous surjections \(X \to X\), nor in the space \(H(X)\) of self-homeomorphisms of \(X\). There exists a manifold \(M\) such that the set of maps with the average shadowing property is not dense in \(C(M)\), \(S(M)\), and \(H(M)\). It is also proven that the set of self-maps of the Cantor set \(\mathfrak{C}\) with wide range of general approximation properties is dense in the space \(C(\mathfrak{C})\). The author studies the problem of transferring a general approximation property from a map on \(X\) to the map on a hyperspace of \(X\), and in the opposite direction.
