The authors develop easily improved upper and new lower bounds for the inverse elements and infinity norms for the inverse of finite tridiagonal diagonally dominant matrices. The results are extended to infinite systems and block tridiagonal infinite systems. The theory is also applied to a special matrix considered by \textit{D. Kershaw} [Math. Comput. 24, 155-158 (1970; Zbl 0229.15012)] and to the evaluation of Bessel functions and Mathieu functions using their recurrence relations.
