By use of the Euler-Maclaurin formula, a series of terms \(e(x)\) evaluated for \(x=j,j+1,\dots,m\) may be approximated in terms of the integral of \(e\) over the range \([j,m]\) and derivatives of \(e(x)\) at \(x=j\) and \(x=m\). \(e(x)\) may be taken to be \(f(x,y)\) and transformed with respect to \(y\) in the same way: an approximation to a double sum of values of \(f(x,y)\) evaluated for \(x=j,\dots,m\) and \(y=k,\dots,n\) is obtained in terms of a double integral and partial derivatives of \(f\). The transformation is applied to an example in which \(f(x,y) = 1/(x^2+y^3)\), the derivatives of \(f\) being evaluated by use of a computer algebra package.
