The traditional way to calculate a geometric optics high-frequency asymptotic approximation to solutions of a hyperbolic system is to do ray tracing. The authors of this paper propose, instead, the tracking of wave fronts. A Liouville equation is solved in phase space, followed by projection onto physical space. The method includes a scaling which eliminates singularities at caustics.
