For \(F_{p}\) the Galois field of order p (p a fixed odd prime), \(GL_{n}=GL(n,F_{p})\), \(U_{n}\) the unipotent subgroup of \(GL_{n}\) and \(X\) a CW-complex, let \(T_{n}:H^{\ast }(X)\rightarrow H^{\ast }((\frac{Z}{p})^{n})\otimes H^{\ast }(X)\) be the iterated total power operation for the ordinary cohomology theory \(H^{\ast }\) with coefficients in \(F_{p}\). In this paper the author gives a description of \(T_{n}\) by means of unipotent invariants of the localization \(\Phi _{n}\) of \(H^{\ast }(B(\frac{Z}{p})^{n})\) with respect to its Euler class \(e_{n}\). \(e_{n}\) is \(GL_{n}\)-invariant, and considering the ring of invariants of \(\Phi _{n}\) (in particular the subring \(\Phi _{n}^{U_{n}}\) of \(\Phi _{n}\)) the author obtains an explicit and short formula for \(T_{n}\) and fundamental properties of \(T_{n}\). The case \(p=2\) has been treated in \textit{L. A. Lomonaco} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 115, No. 4, 1149-1155 (1992; Zbl 0753.55008)]. The author also defines a new group homomorphism \(S_{n}\) with interesting properties, a \(p\)-analogue of the normalized iterated total squaring operation.
