Extending the classical results of S. Bochner on the behavior of the Fourier transform of functions of bounded variation, the author considers such problems on the whole space of functions of bounded variation. The widest subspaces of the space of bounded variation are studied for which the sine and cosine Fourier transforms are integrable. The main result of the paper is the following asymptotic formula for the sine Fourier transform in detail of an arbitrary locally absolutely continuous function of bounded variation: \[ \hat f_s(x) = \frac{1}{x}f(\frac{\pi}{2x})+ \text{ one more term }+F(x) \] with \(F\) integrable. The additional leading term is a key to the full generality within the scope of all functions of bounded variation. Considering this, the author introduces new spaces to the known scales of integrability spaces and studies the relations among them. In particular, proving that the embedding between some of them is proper, he establishes the sharpness of Hardy's inequality. Furthermore, he obtains a new scale of nested spaces, intermediate between the known ones.
