    Let \(G\) be a complex connected reductive algebraic group and let \(\overline{\mathcal O}\) be the closure of the \(G\)-orbit \(\mathcal O\) of a nilpotent element of the Lie algebra of \(G\) with respect to the adjoint action. The authors consider the following question: Let \(m\) be a positive integer; is the \(m\)-th jet scheme of \(\overline{\mathcal O}\) irreducible? They show that for a large number of orbits \(\mathcal O\) the answer is negative. Using this result they deduce certain results about geometric properties of \(\overline{\mathcal O}\) (normality, complete intersection).
