Let \(K\) be an imaginary quadratic field, \({\mathfrak f}\) an integral ideal of \(K\) and \(K_{{\mathfrak f}}\) the ray class field modulo \({\mathfrak f}\) over \(K\). The generalized principal ideal theorem referred to in the title says that for any power \({\mathfrak p}^n\) of a prime ideal there is an element \(\pi_n \in K_{{\mathfrak p}^n}\) associated to \({\mathfrak p}^{1/d}\), where \(d\) is the degree of \(K_{{\mathfrak p}^n}\) over the Hilbert class field of \(K\). This element \(\pi_n\) can be viewed as the elliptic analogue of the element \(\omega_n=e^{2\pi i/p^n}-1\) of the \(p^n\)th cyclotomic field. The set \(\{\omega^n\mid n\geq 1\}\) has many nice properties in relation to the functions \(e_n(z)= 1-e^{2\pi iz/p^n}\). The author shows that the elements \(\pi_n\) have similar properties when \(e_n\) is replaced by a suitable elliptic function. He makes use of his previous results [J. Reine Angew. Math. 398, 105--129 (1989; Zbl 0666.12006)] as well as of some results from his joint work with \textit{S. Bettner} [J. Théor. Nombres Bordx. 13, No. 2, 339--351 (2001; Zbl 1003.11026)].
