    The author presents a pedagogical discussion of one facet of what he believes should be in an introductory linear algebra course. He gives the sequence of results with proofs by which, he contends, the student should be introduced to the concepts of rank, basis, and the factorization of maps. His closing discussion points to the utility of his approach in subsequent applied linear algebra courses.
