    By using the Calderón-Zygmund type operators \(T_{\varepsilon,\lambda}\) given by \[ T_{\varepsilon,\lambda}f(x):=\int_{\{t\in [0,1]:| t-x| \geq \varepsilon\}} \frac {f(t)-f(x)}{| t-x| ^\lambda} dt \] the author solves the saturation problem of the Shepard operators \[ S_{n,\lambda}f(x):=\left(\sum^n_{k=0} f\left(\frac k n\right) \left| x-\frac kn \right| ^{-\lambda}\right) \Biggr/ \left(\sum^n_{k=0}\left| x-\frac kn\right| ^{-\lambda}\right) \] for all \(\lambda \in [1,2]\). More precisely, for \(f\in C[0,1]\) the following results are proved. (1) If \(1<\lambda \leq 2\), then (1.1) \(\left\| S_{n,\lambda} f-f\right\| =o(n^{1-\lambda})\) if and only if \(f=\)constant; (1.2) \(\left\| S_{n,\lambda} f-f\right\| =O(n^{1-\lambda})\) if and only if \(f\in\operatorname{Lip} (\lambda-1)\) and \(\sup_{\varepsilon>0}\| T_{\varepsilon,\lambda}f\| <\infty\). (2) If \(\lambda=1\), then (2.1) \(\| S_{n,1}f-f\| =o(1/\ln n)\) if and only if \(f=\)constant; (2.2) \(\| S_{n,1} f-f\| =O(1/\ln n)\) if and only if \(\omega(f,t)=O(1/| \ln t|)\) \quad and \(\sup_{\varepsilon >0} \| T_{\varepsilon,1}f\| <\infty\). Furthermore, these results are compared to three conjectures stated by \textit{J. Szabados} [J. Approximation Theory Appl. 7, 63-76 (1991; Zbl 0798.41017)] about the saturation problem of the Shepard operators. Finally, it is shown that if \(0<\lambda<1\), then \(\| S_{n,\lambda}J-J\| \to 0\) if and only if \(f=\)constant.
