Stability conditions on triangulated categories were introduced by \textit{T. Bridgeland} [Ann. Math. (2) 166, No. 2, 317--345 (2007; Zbl 1137.18008)]. In the present paper, the author considers a smooth projective surface \(X\) and studies stability conditions on its derived category \(D(X)\). The first result is a comparision theorem between Bridgeland stability and (twisted) Gieseker stability. In particular, given a pair \(\beta,\omega\) in \(NS(X) \otimes {\mathbb R}\) with \(\omega\) ample, one can define a Bridgeland stability condition \(\sigma_{\beta,\omega}\). For a given pair \(\beta,\omega\) one can also consider opportunely twisted Gieseker-stability. The author considers geometrical stability conditions (that is, that are equivalent to some \(\sigma_{\beta,\omega}\) under the natural \(\widetilde{GL}_2^+({\mathbb R})\) action) and gives numerical conditions under which, fixed the pair \(\beta,\omega\), they coincide with twisted Gieseker stability. In the second part, it is assumed that \(X\) has a full strong exceptional sequence \((E_0,\ldots,E_n)\), in which case \(D(X)\) is equivalent to \(D(B_{\mathcal E})\), where \(B_{\mathcal E} = \mathrm{End} (\oplus E_i)\) is a finite dimensional \(\mathbb C\)-algebra. Then \(\mathrm{mod}-B_{\mathcal E}\) is the heart of a t-structure on \(D(X)\) and one can define stability conditions on it. The author considers algebraic stability conditions (that is, that are equivalent to one defined over this heart under the natural \(\widetilde{GL}_2^+({\mathbb R})\) action) and shows that they coincide with stability of \(B_{\mathcal E}\)-modules. In the case \(X={\mathbb P}^2\), the author establishes a correspondence between geometrical algebraic stability conditions and Gieseker stability, retracing also some result from \textit{J. Le Potier}, [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 122, No. 3, 363--369 (1994; Zbl 0829.14004)].
