In recent years, there have been many papers studying linear preserver problems for operator algebras. Rank-nonincreasing linear maps and rank-preserving linear maps are examples of linear preservers. In this paper, the authors discuss some results and conjectures concerning rank-nonincreasing, rank-preserving, completely rank-preserving and completely rank-nonincreasing linear maps on spaces of operators. They show that the main conjectures are equivalent to a statement about closures of joint similarity orbits of \(k\)-tuples of matrices.
