Let \(G\) be a finite group which has a normal subgroup \(N\) containing its own centralizer in \(G\). Let \(p\) be a prime number and let \(R\) be a commutative local ring with residue class field of characteristic \(p\). Suppose that the automorphism \(\alpha\) of the group ring \(RG\) is augmented, that is, \(g\alpha\) is an element in the group \(V(RG)\) of the normalized units in \(RG\) for all \(g\in G\). If \(\alpha\) fixes a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) of \(G\), then the author proves that there exists an automorphism \(\rho\in\Aut G\) such that \(x\alpha\rho=x\) for all \(x\in P\) and \(\alpha\rho\) is an inner automorphism of \(RG\). This result is a special case of a theorem of K. W. Roggenkamp and L. L. Scott (see [\textit{L. L. Scott}, in: Representations of finite groups, Proc. Conf., Arcata/Calif. 1986, Pt. 1, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 47, 259-273 (1987; Zbl 0657.20003)]), but here the proof is constructive and it contains new ideas.
