The authors investigate basic properties of \(G\)-graded coalgebras \(C\) (for a group \(G\)) and their corepresentations. After a lengthy description of the behavior of homogeneous components of \(G\)-graded \(C\)- comodules, they study the functor sending such comodules to their degree 1 component. For this functor they construct a right adjoint functor, the cotensor product with \(C\) over the one-component \(C_1\) of \(C\). The cotensor product wrongfully ascribed to Takeuchi, appeared much earlier in \textit{J. Milnor} and \textit{J. Moore} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 81, 211-264 (1965; Zbl 0163.28202)]. The paper then turns to several equivalent characterizations of strongly graded coalgebras, and eventually to the dual graded algebra to \(C\) and rational modules. Here it repeats essentially the basic theory of the nongraded case. Many of the statements could be phrased much more concisely and in fact be generalized to arbitrary Hopf algebras \(H\) (for \(kG\)) if the authors had used the fact that \(G\)-graded \(k\)-modules are \(kG\)-comodules.
