Given a class \(\mathcal{C}\) of topological spaces the authors give a method to define a topology in \(\mathcal{C}\) by using a class \(\alpha \) of functions between elements of \(\mathcal{C}\) in the following way. They require that \(\mathcal{C}\) does not have two homeomorphic spaces, they also ask that \(\alpha \) has the composition property, which means that the identity of all elements in \(\mathcal{C}\) belongs to \(\alpha \) and the composition of two elements of \(\alpha \) belongs to \(\alpha \). Given a mapping \(f:X\rightarrow Y\) and an open cover \(\mathcal{U}\) of \(X\), the mapping \(f\) is a \(\mathcal{U}\)-mapping provided that there is an open cover \(\mathcal{V}\) of \(Y\) such that \(\{f^{-1}(V):V\in \mathcal{V}\}\) refines \(\mathcal{U}\). Then for a subclass \(\mathcal{D}\) of \(\mathcal{C}\) an element \(X\in \mathcal{ C}\) is in Cl\(_{\alpha }(\mathcal{D})\) provided that for every open cover \( \mathcal{U}\) of \(X\) there is a space \(Y\in \mathcal{D}\) and a \(\mathcal{U}\) -mapping \(f:X\rightarrow Y\) that belongs to \(\alpha \). The authors check that the operator Cl\(_{\alpha }\) satisfies the Kuratowski axioms of the closure operator, and in this way they have a natural topology for \(\mathcal{C}\). After proving general properties of the operator Cl\(_{\alpha }\), the authors investigate some properties of the topological space \((\mathcal{N},\tau _{\alpha })\), where \(\mathcal{N}\) is the space of all nondegenerate metric continua and \(\alpha \) is one of the following classes: all mappings, confluent mappings, or monotone mappings.
