The classical Müntz-Szasz theorem says that for \(f\in L^2([0,1])\) and \(\{n_k\}^\infty_{k=1}\), a strict increasing sequence of positive integers, \[ \left(\int^1_0x^{n_j}f(x)dx=0,\forall j\Rightarrow f=0\right)\Leftrightarrow\sum^\infty_{j=1}{1\over n_j}=\infty. \] Rewriting this integral condition as a condition on the derivatives of the Fourier transform \(\widehat f\), the author first generalizes the theorem to compactly supported functions on \(\mathbb{R}^n\). Then he proves a Müntz-Szasz theorem for the matrix coefficients of the operator valued Fourier transform on connected and simply connected nilpotent Lie groups which have a common polarization for irreducible unitary representations in general position. The study of the nilpotent case is carried out within the framework of the orbit method. Starting from a fixed strong Mal'cev basis of the Lie algebra, the author constructs a well adapted weak Mal'cev basis, called almost strong Mal'cev basis, passing the common polarization. He uses this basis as coordinates in order to calculate the action of irreducible induced representations in general position and the Fourier transform of the test functions as a kernel operator.
