    Let \(H=H_0+Q\), where \(H_0=-i\alpha \cdot\nabla +\beta\) is the free Dirac operator and \(Q\) is the operator of multiplication by the \(4\times 4\) Hermitian matrix \(Q(x)= (q_{ij}(x))\) which is short-range in the sense that \[ \sup_{x\in\mathbb{R}^3} \biggl[\bigl(1+| x| \bigr)^{1+ \varepsilon} \bigl | q_{jk}(x) \bigr| \biggr]< \infty,\quad j,k= 1,2,3,4, \] for some \(\varepsilon>0\). The authors give a proof of the limiting absorption principle for \(H\), and, if \(R(\lambda+i\eta)\), \(R^\pm(\lambda) =\lim_{\eta\to 0}R(\lambda \pm i\eta)\) denote the resolvent and extended resolvents of \(H\) for \(\lambda\in (-\infty,-1] \cup[1,\infty)\), they prove that, for any \(f\in L_2(\mathbb{R}^3,(1+ | x|^2)^\delta dx)\) and \(1/2<\delta \leq\min[1,{1+ \varepsilon\over 2}]\), \(v^\pm=R^\pm (\lambda)f\) satisfies a radiation condition, is the unique solution of \((H-\lambda) v=f\) satisfying this condition and, if \(\lambda>1\), its components \(v^\pm_j\sim c(\lambda, f)r^{-1} e^{\pm ir\sqrt{\lambda^2-1}}\) in \(L_2(S^2)\) as \(r=| x| \to\infty\), where \(S^2\) is the unit sphere in \(\mathbb{R}^3\) and \(c(\lambda,f)\in L_2(S^2)\); the sign of the exponential is changed for \(\lambda<-1\).
