Let \(V\) be a simple Euclidean Jordan algebra with an associative inner product \(\langle\cdot |\cdot\rangle\), and let \(\Omega\) be the corresponding symmetric cone. Let \({\mathfrak I}(V)\) be the compact symmetric space of all primitive idempotents of \(V\), and let \(G(\Omega)\) be the automorphism group of \(\Omega\). The author shows that the function \(s(a,b)\) defined by \[ s(a,b)= \sup_{c\in{\mathfrak I}(V)}\bigl |\log\langle a|c\rangle-\log \langle b|c\rangle \bigr| \] is a \(G(\Omega)\)-invariant complete metric on \(\Omega\) and it coincides with a natural Finsler distance on \(\Omega\). He also shows that any (strictly) conformal compression of \(\Omega\) is a (strict) contraction for the metric \(s(a,b)\), respectively.
