Let \(X\) be a Banach space and let \(n\in\mathbb{N}\). The sets of norm-one elements \(\{x_1, \dots, x_{n+1}\}\) in \(X\) and norm-one elements \(\{f_2, \dots, f_{n+1}\}\) in \(X^*\) satisfy property \((G_n,\varepsilon)\) where \(0\leq \varepsilon\leq 2\) if \(f_i(x_i) =1\) for \(i=2, \dots, n+1\) and \(\displaystyle\min_{i>j} f_i(x_i-x_j) \geq \varepsilon\). The authors define the modulus \(u^{(n)}_X (\varepsilon)= \inf \left\{ 1 - \left\|\frac{x_1+\dots +x_{n+1}}{n+1}\right\| \right\}\) where the infimum is taken over all pairs of sets \(\{x_1, \dots, x_{n+1}\}\), \(\{f_2, \dots, f_{n+1}\}\) satisfying property \((G_n,\varepsilon)\). The authors prove that, if \(X\) is a Banach space with \(\lim_{\varepsilon\to 1^-} u^{(n)}_X(\varepsilon) >0\) for some \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), then \(X\) is a superreflexive space with uniform normal structure. This generalizes the work of \textit{J. Gao} and \textit{K.-S. Lau} [Stud. Math. 99, No. 1, 41--56 (1991; Zbl 0757.46023)] that \(U\)-spaces have uniform normal structure. The authors also prove that, if \(X\) is a fully \(2\)-rotund Banach space with the WORTH property, then the dual space \(X^*\) has normal structure. Recall that \(X\) has the WORTH property if \(\lim_{n\to\infty} ( \| x_n-x\| - \| x_n+x \|) = 0\) for all \(x\) in \(X\) and all weakly null sequences \((x_n)\) in \(X\); and \(X\) is fully \(2\)-rotund if the sequence \((x_n)\) in \(X\) converges whenever the sequence \((x_n+x_m)\) converges. Whether every fully \(2\)-rotund Banach space has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings remains an open question.
