    The authors consider nonnegative (continuous weak) solutions of the porous medium equation with source: \[ u_t-\Delta u^m=u^p\tag{1} \] where \(1<m<p\). The main goal of the paper is to obtain universal a priori bounds for local and global, nonnegative solutions of (1). For instance, the authors show that any radial solution \(u\geq 0\) of (1) in a strip \(\mathbb{R}^N\times(0,T)\) satisfies the estimate: \[ u(x,t)\leq C(N,m,p) \big(t^{-1/(p-1)}+ (T-t)^{-1/(p-1)}\big), \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N,\;t\in(0,T) \] provided \(1<p/m<p_S\), where \[ p_S:=\begin{cases} (N+2) /(N-2), &N\geq 3,\\ \infty, &N\leq 2, \end{cases} \] is the Sobolev exponent. The proof of the universal a priori bounds is based on the following: {\parindent=4mm \begin{itemize}\item[--] Liouville-type nonexistence theorems for bounded entire solutions of \((1)\); \item[--] a doubling lemma and a rescaling procedure, following the method of Polacik, Quittner and Souplet in the case of semilinear equations. \end{itemize}}
