The paper under review is to extend the Theorem 1.2 for classical knots of \textit{P. Ozváth} and \textit{Z. Szabó} [Geom. Topol. 8, 311--334 (2004; Zbl 1056.57020)] to links in homology 3-spheres. The main result is Theorem 1.1 that the difference of number of components of the oriented link \(L\) and the maximal Euler characteristic of the Seifert surface bounded by \(L\) equals twice the maximal grading of the nontrivial knot Floer homology. Ozváth and Szabó proved that the genus of knots is the maximal nontrivial filtraction level of the knot Floer homology by using Gabai's taut foliation of knot complements. The author gives an other conclusion of Theorem 8.9 of \textit{D. Gabai} [J. Differ. Geom. 26, 479--536 (1987; Zbl 0639.57008)] and applies it to the reducible manifold \(Y=Z\# Z\) with irreducible \(Y \setminus K\#K\) and torsionfree first homology \(H_1(Y)\), where \(Z\) is a homology 3-sphere. By the same argument used in Ozváth and Szabó's paper, Proposition 3.5 stating that the genus of knot in homology 3-sphere is the maximal nontrivial filtration grading, is proved. In order to extend to links, the author constructs the following: (1) Murasugi sums of a connected minimal Seifert surface of the link with Hopf bands to get a knot \(K\) in \(Z\); (2) a symplectic structure from taut foliations in Lemma 3.10; (3) a connected sum with fibred knots in \(S^3\) to get a new link \(L^*\) such that the 0-surgery space \(Y_0^*\) embedd into a closed symplectic 4-manifold \((X, \Omega)\) with \(X= X_1 \bigcup_{Y_0^*} X_2\) and \(b_2^+(X_i) > 0 (i=1, 2)\); (4) to follow the same proof of Theorem 1.2 of Ozváth and Szabó. The last section of the paper gives an interpretation of Kauffman's states in terms of knot Floer homology in Theorem 5.3. Other than the special alternative links, it would be interesting to understand the generators of knot Floer chain groups and their gradings in terms of classical knots/links information.
