The authors consider a general variational problem in a time scale \(\mathbb{T}\) with \(\sup \, \mathbb{T} = \infty\). A time scale is an arbitrary closed subset of \(\mathbb{R}\). In particular, it is allowed to be a disrete set. The variational problem is posed in \([a,\infty)\cap \mathbb{T}\), \(a \in \mathbb{T}\) is assumed, and initial conditions are prescribed at \(t = a\). The theory is based on the so-called delta-differentiability to cope with discrete sets \(\mathbb{T}\). The main result is a generalized Euler-Lagrange condition as necessary optimality condition, complemented by a transversality condition for \(t \to \infty\).
