Let \(X^ n\) be a smooth complete intersection variety in complex projective space: \(X\) is called Fano if its anticanonical bundle is very ample. If \(L(X)\) (respectively \(C(X))\) denotes the variety of lines (respectively conics) lying on \(X\), there are natural homomorphisms \(\Psi_ L:H_{n-2}(L(X);\mathbb{Q})\to H_ n(X;\mathbb{Q})\) and \(\Psi_ C\) (similarly). This paper proves that for a general Fano complete intersection of dimension \(n\geq 3\), the maps \(\Psi_ L\) and \(\Psi_ C\) are surjective. The proof is in two parts. For the special case of a variety \(X\) with \(h^{n-1,1}(X)\neq 0\), a cohomological argument is used to show that the corresponding map \(H^{n-1,1}(X)\to H^{n-2,0}(C(X))\) is injective, and the result is deduced using the irreducibility of the monodromy group. -- - The general case is obtained by induction on \(n\) using a proposition in which surjectivity of the map \(\Psi_ L\) for \(X\) is deduced from that of the general member of a Lefschetz pencil on \(X\). The argument for this result is topological, involving direct construction of cycles.
