Let \(\Omega\) be a domain in the complex plane containing the unit disk, and let \(f\) be holomorphic in \(\Omega\). The Taylor series of \(f\) about \(0\) is called universal if for all compact sets \(K\) with connected complement and not intersecting \(\Omega\), the partial sums \(s_n f\) of the Taylor series form a dense set in \(A(K)\), the set of all functions continuous on \(K\) and holomorphic in the interior of \(K\). It is known that functions \(f\) with universal Taylor series exist for all simply connected domains \(\Omega\), and for all domains \(\Omega\) being the complement of a continuum or the complement of a finite set. The main result of this note shows that no \(f\) with universal Taylor series exists in the case of a domain \(\Omega = \mathbb{C} \setminus (\{1\} \cup L)\), where \(L\) is a non-degenerate continuum outside the closed unit disk. This is the first example of a domain with bounded complement that carries no universal Taylor series.
