This is the second edition of a book which has been previously reviewed for Zentralblatt (for the review see [Zbl 0926.74001]). As an extension of the first edition, we now find new material on single-crystal plasticity -- a field which became of paramount importance during the last years -- and on strain gradient plasticity, also a trendy new field of intensive research activities, and the combination of the two. For these two issues there are not only theoretical challenges, but also numerical ones, which are addressed in this new edition. Apart from that, the entire book has been revised and up-dated, in particular the references. As before, the first part of the book is devoted to the continuum mechanics side of plasticity, which is mainly concerned with material modelling. The second part deals with the formulation of variational principles, while the third one presents the numerical treatment of elastoplasticity. The entire book deals only with small deformation plasticity, which is hardly understandable since many applications like metal forming etc. are in the large deformation regime. The book is clearly written, uses a modern notation and can surely be recommended to researchers in this interesting field.
