Let \(A\) be a \(W^*\)-algebra and \(A_*\), its unique predual. A new locally convex topology \(\overline\beta\) is developed for the study of the algebra \(A\). It is shown that if \(A\) is a type I \(W^*\)-algebra, that is either countably decomposable, commutative, or a factor, then \(\overline\beta\) is the Mackey topology for the dual pair \(\langle A,A_*\rangle\). Consequently, when \(A =L^\infty(X,\mu)\), where \(X\) is completely regular and \(\mu\) is a compact regular Borel measure on \(X\), \(A^*_{\overline\beta}=L^1 (K,\mu)\) and \(\overline\beta\) convergence on uniformly bounded sets is equivalent to convergence in measure.
