Let \(X\) be a real Banach space and \(X^*\) its dual space. An operator \(T:X\supset D(T)\rightarrow 2^{X^*}\) is said to be monotone if for every \(x,y\in D(T)\), \(u^{*}\in Ty\), \(v^{*}\in Ty\), one has \(\langle u^{*}-v^{*},x-y\rangle\geq0.\) In [\textit{A. G. Kartsatos}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 348, 1663--1707 (1996; Zbl 0861.47029)], the following theorem was proved: Theorem. Let \(T:X\supset D(T)\rightarrow 2^{X^*}\) be maximal monotone and \(C:D(T)\rightarrow X^{*}\); let \((T+J)^{-1}\) be compact and \(G\subset X\) be open, bounded and such that, for some \(z\in D(T)\cap G, \langle v^{*}+Cx, x-z\rangle >0, (x,v^{*})\in (D(T)\cap\partial G)\times Tx.\) If the operator \(C(\lambda T+J)^{-1}\) is compact for a fixed positive constant \(\lambda\) and the set \(C(D(T)\cap \overline{G})\) is bounded, then \(0^{*}\in (T+C)(D(T)\cap\overline{G})\). The author improves this theorem in two respects: he gives a better assertion under the same assumptions and furthermore proves its assertion under weaker assumptions. He also discusses global extensions of this theorem.
