The authors deal with the following class of nonconservative hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations \[ \partial_t u+ A(u)\partial_x u=0,\qquad \partial_t v+ A(u)\partial_x v=0, \] where the unknowns \(u= u(x,t)\), \(v= v(x, t)\in\mathbb{R}^N\) are defined for all \(x\in\mathbb{R}\) and \(t\geq 0\). They assume that the matrix-valued function \(A(u)\) is strictly hyperbolic. The authors prove the existence of weak solutions for the corresponding Cauchy problem, in the class of bounded functions with bounded variation.
