The authors prove the following theorem. Let \(X\) be a compact complex manifold homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold \(Y\) with negative sectional curvature. If \(X\) admits a Kähler metric \(\omega\) then it admits a Kähler-Einstein metric of general type. Moreover each submanifold of \(X\) admits a Kähler-Einstein metric of general type. The method of proof is to show that \((X,\omega)\) is Kähler hyperbolic and hence the canonical line bundle \(K_X\) is ample, \(c_1(X)<0\), and then the authors use the Aubin-Yau theorem. The authors also prove the following theorem. Let \((X,\omega)\) be a compact symplectic manifold homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvarture. Then, for any almost complex structure \(J\) on \(X\) which is compatible with \(\omega\), there exists no non-constant \(J\)-holomorphic map \(f:\mathbb C\rightarrow X\).
