Direction-adaptive nonreflecting boundary conditions (Q1815903)

Nonreflecting boundary conditions (NRBC) are used in wave equations with Sommerfeld reflecting condition at infinity. In order to use them in approximations they are imposed at a finite artificial boundary. In this case the problem is to make NRBC embody some information about the neglected exterior domain. By traversing the artificial boundary some waves are reflected which induces errors in the numerical solution. The authors propose a nonlinear NRBC although the problems are linear. Numerical experiments show that this approach is superior in accuracy to the actual ``local linear NRBC''.
