The paper deals with boundary value problems for second order differential-difference equations of the form \[ -(R^{\epsilon}u)'(x)=f(x), \;x\in Q:=(0,a)\subseteq\mathbb{R}\quad \text{ and }\quad u(x)=0\text{ for } x\notin Q.\tag{\(*\)} \] Here, \(R^{\epsilon}: L_2(\mathbb{R})\rightarrow L_2(\mathbb{R})\) is the operator defined by \(R^{\epsilon}u:=A^{\epsilon}u+Bu,\) where \(A^{\epsilon}\) is a linear difference operator of special form depending on a small parameter \(\epsilon>0\) and \(B:L_2(\mathbb{R})\rightarrow L_2(\mathbb{R})\) is a linear difference operator of the form \[ (Bu)(x):=b_0u(x)+\sum_{k=0}^Nb_k(u(x+k)+u(x-k)). \] In Section 2 the author investigates the behavior of \(R^{\epsilon}\) as \(\epsilon\) tends to zero and the operator \(A^{\epsilon}\) has the form \[ (A^{\epsilon}u)(x):=a_0u(x)+\sum_{i=1}^pa_i(u(x+i\epsilon)+u(x-i\epsilon)). \] In Section 3 the limiting behavior of problem \((*)\), as \(\epsilon\to0\), is investigated and sufficient conditions are given such that the family of generalized solutions of the perturbed problem converges to the solution of the limiting problem. Section 4 deals with difference operators of the form \(R^{\tau}u=A^{\tau}u+Bu\), where \(A^{\tau}\) has the simpler form \[ (A^{\tau}u)(x):=a_0u(x)+a_{\tau}(u(x+\tau)+u(x-\tau)) \] with \(a_0, a_{\tau}\) real numbers. If \(\tau\) is irrational (resp. rational), the operator is an \textit{irrational} (resp. \textit{rational}) operator. The author suggests sufficient conditions for the family \(R^{\tau}\) to be positive definite. In Section 5 boundary value problems of the form \((*)\) with irrational operators are investigated. Such problems are approximated by rational problems and some sufficient conditions are given for the convergence of solutions of rational problems to the solution of the irrational one. Several examples are presented and the graphs of their solutions are shown by using Maple software.
