The aim of this monograph is to present in a comprehensive way the theory of nonlinear dynamics for abstract semilinear Cauchy problems along with its applications, in particular to age-structured models. It requires a basic knowledge of real analysis, complex analysis, functional analysis, the theory of ordinary as well as partial differential equations. The monograph begins with the Foreword written by G. Webb, it contains the following nine chapters: \begin{itemize} \item[1.] Introduction \item[2.] Semigroups and Hille-Yosida theorem \item[3.] Integrated semigroups and Cauchy problems with non-dense domain \item[4.] Spectral theory for linear operators \item[5.] Semilinear Cauchy problems with non-dense domain \item[6.] Center manifolds, Hopf bifurcation, and normal forms \item[7.] Functional differential equations \item[8.] Age-structured models \item[9.] Parabolic equations \end{itemize} The first six chapters have rather a theoretical character while the three last chapters are devoted to applications of those theoretical results discussed earlier. Every chapter ends with Remarks and Notes which contain further information, in particular, suggestions for further reading. The References in this monograph are very rich and consist of 411 items. In Chapter 1, the authors recall some fundamentals of the theory of ordinary differential equations, the theory of retarded functional differential equations and age-structured models as well. The authors show how the equations under consideration can be formulated as abstract Cauchy problems. One can also find in this chapter some fundamental properties of matrices and some fundamental results of the center manifold theory, the Hopf bifurcation theorem and the normal form theory. Chapter 2 is devoted to the basic concepts and results concerning semigroups, resolvents and infinitesimal generators for linear operators. The authors also present in the Hille-Yosida theorem for strongly continuous semigroups. In Chapter 3, the authors introduce the reader to integrated semigroup theory which is used to the investigation of the existence and uniqueness of the so-called mild solutions to nonhomogeneous Cauchy problems in the case when the domain of the corresponding operator \(A\) is not dense. The results included in this section are applied to the study of the age structured problem in \(L^p\) spaces. Chapter 4 is devoted to basic results of the spectral theory for linear operators. In particular, the authors discuss basic properties of analytic mappings, spectra and resolvents of linear operators, the Fredholm alternative and Nussbaum's theorem on the radius of the essential spectrum for bounded linear operators. Moreover, they focus on Webb's theorem on the relation between the spectrum of semigroups and the spectrum of their infinitesimal generators. The main topic of Chapter 5 are non-densely defined semilinear Cauchy problems. The authors discuss such issues like the existence and uniqueness of integrated solutions, the positivity of solutions, the differentiability of solutions with respect to state variable and the time differentiability. Three main topics of Chapter 6 are: the center manifold theory, the Hopf bifurcation theorem and the normal form theory for abstract semilinear Cauchy problems with non-dense domain. Chapter 7 begins the second part of this monograph concerning applications of the theories developed in the previous chapters. The authors discuss three types of functional differential equations, namely: retarded functional differential equations, neutral functional differential equations and partial functional differential equations. In particular, one can find a delayd transport model of cell growth and division. Chapter 8 is entirely devoted to age-structured models. In its first section, the authors discuss general age-structured models. The main result in this section is the Hopf bifurcation theorem for such models. In the next section, the authors discuss in detail a susceptible-infectious model with age of infection. In particular, they focus on local and global stability of the disease-free equilibrium, and local and global stabilities of the endemic equilibrium. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate the infection-age model. In this chapter, the authors also discuss a scalar age-structured model focusing, in particular, on the existence of integrated solutions, Hopf bifurcation and normal forms. The last chapter of this monograph is devoted to parabolic equations. In its first part, the authors focus on abstract non-densely defined parabolic equations discussing almost sectorial operators, semigroup estimates and fractional powers, linear Cauchy problems and providing also some perturbation results. In the second part, they consider a size-structured model described by a reaction-diffusion equation with a nonlocal boundary condition. This interesting monograph can be a useful tool for researchers interested in the theory of abstract differential equations along with their applications, especially in age-structured models. However, it can be also used by graduate students as well as PhD students who are willing to get familiar with this theory. A theoretical part of this monograph is well complemented by examples and applications. Remarks and Notes appearing at the end of each chapter are a good hint for further reading. The monograph is worth to be recommended.
