This monograph is devoted to \(C^\infty\) well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for linear hyperbolic systems with analytic coefficients. The author is interested in the following two questions for such systems of order \(q\) with \(m\times m\) matrix coefficients: (A): Under which conditions on lower order terms is the Cauchy problem \(C^\infty\) well-posed? (B): Under which conditions is the Cauchy problem \(C^\infty\) well-posed for any lower order term? In Chapter 1 the author gives a positive answer to question (B) for symmetric hyperbolic systems. Moreover, he gives examples for classes of non-symmetrizable systems which allow a positive answer to question (B), too. Finally, he proves Lax-Mizohata theorem and discusses the question for Levi conditions to terms of lower-order. In Chapter 2 the author studies necessary conditions for (B) for systems of first-order. The conditions are formulated in terms of minors of the principal symbol. The maximal size of the Jordan blocks is essential to answer question (B). Chapter 3 is devoted to study \(2\times 2\) systems of first-order with two independent variables. The author proposes necessary and sufficient conditions to answer questions (A) and (B). The conditions are formulated by using pseudo-characteristic curves for the differential operator and Newton polygons. Finally, in Chapter 4 the author studies hyperbolic systems with non-degenerate characteristics generalizing strictly hyperbolic systems which are hyperbolic systems with non-degenerate characteristics of order 1. Those systems allow a positive answer to question (B). Moreover, stability of non-degenerate characteristics is proved. In this way one has a positive answer to (B) for systems which are in some sense near a hyperbolic system with non-degenerate characteristics of order \(r\). Some considerations for stability of symmetric systems under perturbations complete this chapter. This monograph shows among other things that for systems the reader can expect quite different results in comparison with linear hyperbolic equations. A challenge in further research is to avoid the assumption of analyticity of coefficients. The monograph is divided into the following chapters: 1. Introduction; 2. Necessary conditions for strong hyperbolicity; 3. Two by two systems with two independent variables; 4. Systems with non-degenerate characteristics.
