The authors consider the discrete Hamiltonian system \[ \begin{aligned} u_1(t+1)-u_1(t)&=- H_{u_2}(t,u_1(t+1), u_2(t))\\ u_2(t+1)-u_2(t)&=H_{u_1}(t,u_1(t+1), u_2(t)).\end{aligned} \] Here \(H:\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{R}^{2d}\to\mathbb{R}\) is \(T\)-periodic in \(t\in\mathbb{Z}\) and \(C^1\) in \(x\in\mathbb{R}^{2d}\). Under additional growth conditions on \(H\) near \(0\) and \(\infty\) the authors prove the existence of at least three \(T\)-periodic solutions. The proof is based on variational methods. The assumptions on \(H\) are such that the associated functional satisfies the Palais-Smale condition and is bounded below, \(0\) is a solution and there is a local linking at \(0\).
