The classical Minkowski problem deals with the existence and uniqueness of closed convex hypersurfaces in \(R^d\) with preassigned Gauss curvature viewed as a function of the outer normals. For polytopes it asks for necessary and sufficient conditions on unit vectors \(n_1\), \dots, \(n_N \in S^{d-1}\) and positive real numbers \(v_1\), \dots, \(v_N\) that guarantee the existence of a convex closed polytope in \(R^d\) with \(N\) facets whose outer normals and areas are given \(n_i\) and \(v_i\). The authors discussed the \(L_p\) Minkowski problem, a generalisation of the Minkowski problem arisen in the Brunn-Minkowski-Firey theory of \(p\)-sums of convex bodies, see [\textit{E. Lutwak}, J. Differ. Geom. 38, No. 1, 131--150 (1993; Zbl 0788.52007)]. For polytopes it asks for necessary and sufficient conditions on unit vectors \(n_1\),\dots, \(n_N \in S^{d-1}\) and positive real numbers \(v_1\),\dots, \(v_N\) that guarantee the existence of a convex closed polytope \(P\) in \(R^d\) with \(N\) facets such that (i) the origin \(O\) belongs to the interior of \(P\), (ii) the outer normals of facets are given \(n_1\),\dots, \(n_N\), (iii) the areas of facets, \(w_1\),\dots, \(w_N\), and their distances from the origin, \(h_1,\dots, h_N\), satisfy \(h^{1-p}_iw_i = v_i\) for all \(i\). For general and particular solutions of the \(L_p\) Minkowski problem see [\textit{E. Lutwak} [loc. cit.], \textit{E. Lutwak, D. Yang} and \textit{G. Zhang}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 356, No. 11, 4359--4370 (2004; Zbl 1069.52010), \textit{A. Stancu}, Adv. Math. 167, No. 1, 160--174 (2002; Zbl 1005.52002), \textit{A. Stancu}, Adv. Math. 180, No. 1, 290--323 (2003; Zbl 1054.52001), \textit{K.-S. Chou} and \textit{X.-J. Wang}, ``The \(L_p\)-Minkowski problem and the Minkowski problem in centroaffine geometry'', to appear in Adv. Math.]. The authors present different polytopal approaches to the \(L_p\) Minkowski problem, \(p>1\). The problem is solved first for discrete measures and polytopes, after that extensions of obtained results to general measures and convex hypersurfaces are derived with use of appropriate approximations of continuous data by discrete ones.
