The present book is devoted to spectrum localization problems for linear operators in Hilbert spaces. The emphasis is put on bounds for the eigenvalues and the spectral radius rather than the more developed theory of the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues. The investigation is based upon estimates for the norm of a regular matrix- (resp. operator-) valued function which go back to I. M. Gel'fand and G. E. Shilov. In the late 1970s, the author obtained sharp results in the case of normal matrices and later extended them to norms of the resolvent for various classes of nonselfadjoint operators. The application of such estimates to spectral problems constitutes the subject of the book. The first part (Chapters 1-5) deals with finite-dimensional operators and functions of such operators, including relations for eigenvalues of finite matrices, invertibility conditions and spectrum inclusion regions, as well as upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius. The most important part of the book (Chapters 6-9) concerns bounds for the norms of the resolvent and analytic functions of compact operators in Hilbert spaces, in particular, the von Neumann-Schatten operators. Such bounds form the main tool in the study of the spectrum localization of certain classes of operators. The rest of the book is devoted to some specific classes of operators (integral, integro-differential, differential, infinite operator matrices) as well as the application of the above results to the theory of entire functions of finite order (perturbation of zeros and bounds for sums of their absolute values in terms of the Taylor coefficients).
