Absorbing boundary conditions for electromagnetic wave propagation problems are discussed from the point of view of unsplit perfectly matched layers (PML). PML acts as if the computational domain is covered with a metal acting as perfect electric conductor. The author derives and implements two improved local absorbing boundary conditions which do not share the perfect electric conductor termination problem. Furthermore analytical reflection coefficients of the composite layer are derived. The paper concludes with extensive numerical tests.
