Let \(f:Y \mapsto X\) be a ramified covering between \(n\)-dimensional compact complex manifolds with covering multiplicity \(\mu\). Assuming the ramification divisor \(R_f = \sum_ir_iR_i\) and the irreducible component of the branch locus \(B_f = \sum_ib_iB_i\) of \(f\) are all non-singular, the difference \(c_1^{N_1} \cdots c_n^{N_n}(Y) - c_1^{N_1} \cdots c^{N_n}(X)\) is explicitely computed (Theorem, Section 3.2). Here \(c_i\) means the \(i\)-th Chern class and \(\sum_i iN_i = n\). As applications, the generalized Riemann-Hurwitz formula \(\chi(Y) - \mu \cdot \chi(X) = - \sum_i b_i \cdot \chi(B_i)\), \(b_i = \sum_i n_i r_i\) [\textit{Y. Yomdin}, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 40, Part 2, 663-665 (1983; Zbl 0541.32004)], Hirzebruch's signature formula, \(\text{Sign}(Y) - \mu \cdot \text{Sign}(X) =1/3(p_1(Y) - \mu \cdot p_1(X))\) , \(X\), \(Y\) are surfaces, and its Todd genus analogy \(T(Y) - \mu \cdot T(X) = 1/12\{(c_2(Y) - \mu \cdot c_2(X)) + (c_1(Y)^2 - \mu \cdot c_1(X)^2)\}\) are derived (corresponding formulas for three, four, five and six dimensional spaces are also calculated). Proof is done in the framework of the Čech-deRham cohomology theory and Chern-Weil theory of characteristic classes. They are reviewed in this paper (Section 2). Then the isomorphism \(H^2(X, X-D;\mathbb C) \cong H_{2n-2}(D;\mathbb C)\) together with its concrete correspondence (Section 3.1) are given, the author says, the discussion in this part is a simplification of Suwa's results [\textit{T. Suwa}, Dual class of a subvariety, to appear in Tokyo J. Math.]. The theorem is proved by using this isomorphism and analysis on the ramification divisor and the branch locus.
